A clogged sink drain can be a major inconvenience, but there are a few simple things you can do to unclog it yourself
Many homeowners think that their sinks are designed to have anything rinsed down the drain. However, there are at least 12 things that should never go down your drain. These substances can wreak havoc on your sink, causing the drain to clog.
This guide will discuss the top five ways to fix a blocked sink. Stay on top of the health of your drains so you don’t encounter any serious issues with your plumbing problems.
1. Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain
Pouring boiling water down your sink drain might not be the first thing you think of as a remedy for a clogged sink. Most blocked sinks are caused by:
- Hair
- Soap residue
- Tepid water
- Grease
Boiling water is effective at dissolving a clog, especially if it’s caused by grease or soap scum. Hot tap water isn’t enough to get rid of it — it needs to be boiling.
2. Check Out Your Garbage Disposal
Your garbage disposal might be the reason you’re dealing with a blocked drain. Turning on the garbage disposal might get rid of the blockage.
If you hear a low humming sound from the appliance when you turn it on, it might be broken or jammed. You need to disconnect the garbage disposal from power before trying to fix it. However, if fixing or running your garbage disposal doesn’t fix your issue, the clog is typically caused by something else.
3. Use a Plunger
Plungers are another effective method to unblock a sink. Toilet plungers can help with clogs, but flat-bottomed ones are better. Follow these steps to unclog your sink with a plunger:
- Fill your sink halfway full of hot water
- Put the plunger over the drain
- Quickly pump the plunger up and down a few times
- See if the sink drains
- Repeat as needed
4. Use Vinegar and Baking Soda
Baking soda and vinegar are a natural way to fix your sink drain. All you need to do is pour one cup of baking soda down the drain. Use a spoon or spatula to push it into your drain if needed.
Then, pour a cup of vinegar into your drain. Cover it with your drain stopper and let it sit for 15 minutes. Run hot tap water down the drain and repeat if necessary.
5. Clean Your Sink’s P-Trap Drain
There might be a blockage in your sink’s p-trap. The p-trap is the elbow-shaped pipe that’s underneath your sink. Remove the p-trap and clean it to fix the problem.
